Sponsorship Immigration Visas
To be eligible for Family Class Sponsorship, individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada must have a close relative willing to sponsor them and that relative must either be a Canadian citizen or a Canadian Permanent Resident.
Family Class Sponsorship Visa Program
To qualify under Canada Family Class Sponsorship:
The relationship between the Sponsor and the Sponsored Person (the Family Class immigrant) must be one of the following:
- Spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner; or
- Parent or grandparent
No new applications for parent or grandparent sponsorships are accepted at present. Program will reopen in January 2017 again.
Parent and Grandparent Super Visa Program
Parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible to apply for this visa. It is important to note that no dependents can be included on this application. Only parents or grandparents, and their spouses or common-law partners, may apply for the Super Visa.
- Dependent child; or
- Brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild who is orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship; or
- Intended adopted child under 18 years of age; or
- Other relative, if the Sponsor has no relative listed above and no relatives who are Canadian citizens or Canadian Permanent Residents (limited to one relative only).
The Sponsored Person must have a Sponsor who :
- Is a Canadian citizen or a Canadian Permanent Resident; and
- Meets the family class sponsorship requirements.
Some Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP) have Family Sponsorship components that are less stringent than the Federal Family Class category of immigration. In some PNP's, qualifying family members are the same as Federal Family Class, but other ones can be open to more distant relations, such as cousins.
Spousal Sponsorship (Marriage) Visa Program
Family reunification is one of the main objectives of the Canadian immigration system. Canada makes it possible for it’s citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their close relatives by sponsoring them.
